The World Bicycle Day

Following an initiative by Dr Leszek Sibilski, a sociology professor and member of the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee, the United Nation (UN) established officially in 2018 the World Bicycle Day which is celebrated on 3 June every year. Recently, UNESCO recognised the bicycle as an essential tool in physical education, highlighting its potential to have a positive impact on the lives of more than 1.3 billion students worldwide, UN RESOLUTION – Bicycle Day – 2018 – English text.pdf. This recognition strengthens the commitment to integrating the bicycle as a central element in public policies related to active mobility, education, and health.
Taking inspiration from the ideas of Pierre de Coubertin and the work of Leszek Sibilski, the New Acropolis School of Sport with Heart (BRA) History – Escuela del Deporte con Corazón and the Brazilian Pierre de Coubertin Committee, www.coubertinbrasil.com.br, invited everyone to join them on a symbolic and practical cycling event which offers an opportunity to reflect on the motion and celebrates the transformative power of simple, accessible ideas.
The New Acropolis School of Philosophy, in partnership with the Brazilian Pierre de Coubertin Committee, organised the ‘Philosophical Ride’ event to celebrate World Bicycle Day. This event took place in various cities across 18 countries worldwide. The event aimed to provide a unique outdoor experience combining philosophy, health and sustainability, and invited the public to consider the transformative impact of bicycles on our lives and societies.
This activity celebrates the sport of cycling and the universal values associated with bicycles, such as freedom, equality, well-being and environmental awareness. The ‘Philosophical Ride’ event also paid tribute to Pierre de Coubertin, a cycling enthusiast who regarded the bicycle as a personal and cultural ally.We would like to thank our Vice-President, Nelson Todt, and his colleagues, Ricardo Vela at the New Acropolis School and Francisco Iglesias in Spain, for initiating this international event, which is taking place in 18 countries.
