PRESS RELEASE:
On Monday, 5 January 2026, the San Marino National Fair Play Committee (CNSFP) and the San Marino Pierre de Coubertin Committee attended the important and significant Milan Cortina 2026 Olympic Flame Lighting Ceremony, held in Piazza Malatesta in Rimini. The Olympic Flame symbolises peace, unity, brotherhood, purity and continuity between the ancient and modern games. It is lit in Olympia, Greece, and carried in a relay to emphasise a universal message of hope, loyalty, and encounter between peoples, illuminating the pursuit of sporting excellence.
It also represents freedom, life and civilisation, as derived from the myth of Prometheus. It acts as a link between the ancient Games, where it burned continuously, and the modern Games, culminating in the lighting of the cauldron.
As the flame is lit, the connection between cultures, generations and shared ideals is renewed. Each Olympic edition begins with this ritual, reminding the world of the power of sport to bring people together.
The flame shines as a promise of a better future and as a messenger of timeless values. Its departure from Olympia marks the start of an epic journey across countries, cities, histories and peoples.
We would also like to extend our warmest wishes to the Olympic delegation of the Republic of San Marino, who will be taking part in the upcoming Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. We wish them every success, in the true Olympic spirit.
