Sport and Olympic Values: Catalysts for Women’s Empowerment in India
We extend our sincere congratulations to our member, Dr. Uma Kant Singh in India for taking the initiative to organize the workshop entitled “Sport as a Path to Empowerment and Employment: Breaking Barriers Through Olympic Values, Yoga and Women Participation,” held on 27–28 February 2026. A total of 180 young girls, aged 6 to 20, coming from several villages situated in the area of the town of Singrauli, participated in the workshop, dedicating one week of collaborative effort to its preparation.
This meaningful initiative reflects a strong commitment to education, empowerment, and the holistic development of young girls in India. Promoting sport as a vehicle for confidence, opportunity, and social progress is fully aligned with the IPCC shared mission to transmit the values of the Olympic Movement: excellence, friendship, and respect to people of all ages, and especially to the youth.
We commend Dr. Uma Kant Singh for his valuable contribution to this important undertaking. Such efforts are both inspiring and forward-looking, and we trust that this workshop will be the first in a long series of educational initiatives dedicated to shaping the future of young citizens through sport and its universal values.
The theory and practice of the workshop focused on the Olympic values of excellence, respect, and friendship, and on Yoga, which cultivates discipline, awareness, and inner balance. When brought together, these two traditions create something truly powerful: not just better athletes, but better human beings. The Olympic Values inspire to strive for our personal best, to treat others with dignity, and to build friendships beyond boundaries. Yoga strengthens this foundation by developing self-discipline, inner harmony, and mindful awareness. Together, they teach that in sports, and in life, mental strength is just as important as physical ability.
We extend our sincere congratulations to the Principal, Dr. M. U. Siddiqui of Government Girls College, Waidan, for his initiative in organizing this workshop and for his continued dedication to the education and well-being of young people. We also express our heartfelt appreciation to the teachers whose commitment and efforts contributed significantly to the success of the program. Our gratitude is further extended to Mr. Gaurav Benal for his valuable support and his steadfast commitment to the development of sport and community growth.
The event received extensive coverage in the local press of Singrauli, thanks to the keen interest and support of journalists from the region.
