In Tribute to Pierre de Coubertin: A January 1st Tradition
The Pierre de Coubertin School in Mexico commemorates the birth of Pierre de Coubertin each year by organizing a series of sporting events collectively known as the Olympic Games. In January 2026, the celebrations began with the official lighting of the Olympic flame at the Community Museum in Atzompa, the town where the school is located. This ceremony was followed by a torch relay, marking the formal inauguration of the Games.
The opening ceremony featured the raising of the Olympic flag, accompanied by the performance of both the Olympic anthem and the Mexican national anthem, the latter composed for the 1968 Olympic Games held in Mexico. On the same day, a presentation on Pierre de Coubertin was delivered to raise awareness among students of his enduring legacy and the educational values that he promoted.
Throughout the week, a wide range of sporting competitions and cultural activities took place, with participation from students across all age groups.
We commend the Pierre de Coubertin School in Mexico for its continued commitment to promoting Olympic values education, a mission it has upheld since 1997, when the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee (IPCC) established its global network of Pierre de Coubertin schools.
