Tanzania to Commemorate Pierre de Coubertin – 2 September 2026

On 2 September 2026, the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee (IPCC) and its worldwide network remember Pierre de Coubertin, who passed away in Geneva on 2 September 1937.

In Tanzania, this year’s commemoration will have particular significance. The National Pierre de Coubertin Committee of Tanzania will mark the 89th anniversary of Coubertin’s passing with a special event to be held on Saturday, 5 September 2026.

The celebration will bring together remembrance, education and an important new chapter in the development of the Coubertin movement in Tanzania.

The programme will include the celebration of Coubertin Day and the official recognition of the National Pierre de Coubertin Committee of Tanzania by the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee.

A presentation dedicated to thelife, work and legacy of Pierre de Coubertin will introduce participants to the man whose educational vision inspired the revival of the Olympic Games and whose belief in education through sport continues to have relevance for young people around the world today.

The event will also provide an opportunity to introduce the Pierre de Coubertin School of Tanzania, recently recognized by the IPCC as a member of its international network of Pierre de Coubertin schools. Through this recognition, Tanzania joins a worldwide educational community committed to transmitting Olympic values and Coubertin’s humanistic educational philosophy to new generations.

The ceremony will be honoured by the presence of the Deputy Minister responsible for Information, Culture and Sports in Zanzibar, who will attend as Guest of Honour.

By commemorating Pierre de Coubertin while at the same time strengthening educational initiatives bearing his name, Tanzania is giving a living dimension to his legacy. The event will not only look back at the life of the founder of the modern Olympic Movement, but also look towards the future by encouraging young people to discover and put into practice the values of excellence, friendship, respect, fair play and the joy of effort.
