Coubertin Scholarship Award
The Pierre de Coubertin Prize has been awarded every two years by the CIPC since 2008 in recognition of outstanding Master’s and PhD theses on Coubertin, Coubertin’s Olympic idea and its development and ethical aspects of the Olympic Movement. For the 2017-18 edition, the CIPC received works from nine candidates in the PhD thesis category and seven candidates in the Master’s thesis category. The jury was chaired by Otto Schantz and comprised the following members: Jean Durry, Junko Tahara, Stephan Wassong and Halina Zdebska. Comments were also submitted by Nelson Todt. The jury decided to honour the following works:
- PhD thesis by Axel Elías Jiménez: Everyday politics and sport: citizenry and state formation during the XIX Olympiad in Mexico City 1963-1968.
- Master’s thesis by Eric Rohde: Die Olympischen Spiele in Rio de Janeiro 2016 im Blickpunkt repräsentativer Tageszeitungen in drei Ländern [The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro as seen by representative daily newspapers in three countries].
The CIPC continues to present this award as it is highly recognised in the academic community and beyond. A new working group was established at the General Assembly in 2019 to develop a sustainable profile of the academic award for the future. Further responsibilities of the working group will include promoting the award in the academic world and selecting the award-winners. The first winners will be honoured in 2021. The working group will be chaired by Professor Norbert Müller (GER) and Professor Nelson Schneider Todt (BRA). Other members of the CIPC will be appointed to this commission based on the proposals of the two co-chairs. The working group will also take into consideration the introduction and development of a scholarship award. The announcement of the Coubertin Academic Prize and the Coubertin Scholarship Award will be published on the website as soon as the working group has agreed on both profiles.
