A Pierre de Coubertin Day was organized on Thursday 10th October 2019 under the auspices of the National Pierre de Coubertin Committee of the Cameroon as a part of the celebrations of 20th anniversary of the foundation of this committee. It was also an opportunity to celebrate a Forum on Sport and Olympism and to present Pierre de Coubertin Trophies of the year 2019.


More than hundred participants took part in the events, among them Mrs. Odette ENGOULOU, Member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), senior government officials, members of the National Pierre de Coubertin Committee, leaders of national sports organizations, representatives of civil society, representatives of the media, etc.


Dr. Malik Atour EVELE, President of the Cameroon Pierre de Coubertin Committee, gave an opening speech and a video message of Prof. Stephan WASSONG, President of the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee was presented.


After the opening ceremony participants were treated to a conference given by prominent academics and sports experts on Olympic humanism, Olympic governance, sport as a human right, the settlement of disputes, the sporting influence of the Cameroon internationally and the fight against doping in sport in the Cameroon.


These rich communications were followed by fruitful discussions that made recommendations to public authorities and relevant organizations in order to help improve the Cameroon sports system and the dissemination of Olympic values in the society.


This scientific part of the programme was followed by the presentation of decorations to the Members and staff of Cameroon National Pierre de Coubertin Committee for the years of service and the quality of their contribution.


The Committee also awarded its Pierre de Coubertin Trophies for the year 2019 to particularly deserving sports players. In total, eight trophies were awarded for Sports Excellence Category, Athlete of the Year, Junior Athlete of the Year, 2019 Team of the Year, Radiant Personality of the year, Sport Leader of the Year, Coach of the Year 2019, Referee of the year 2019, Sports Organization of the Year and the Chivalrous spirit of the year.


The celebration of Pierre de Coubertin Day was also an opportunity for the Committee to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Council of Appellants of Civic Services, a civil society organization working on the moral rearmament of young people and the training of responsible citizens, under the auspices of the National Civil Service Agency of Cameroon.
