Brazilian Pierre de Coubertin Committee and New Acropolis School of Philosophy

The Brazilian Pierre de Coubertin Committee (CBPC) has inaugurated a new room. The “Pierre de Coubertin Room”, as it is known, is now open to the public, with historical materials related to the creator of the Olympic Games of the modern era, to the Greek antiquity, to Olympism, to the Olympic Charter, as well as records of the meetings held at the International Olympic Academy.

The initiative is an institutional partnership between CBPC and the School of Sport with Heart of the New Acropolis School of Philosophy, where the space is located. The launch event was attended by CBPC President Nelson Todt, as well as New Acropolis International President Carlos Adelantado, School of Sport with Heart International Director Francisco Iglesias and School of Sport with Heart Brazil Director Ricardo Vela.

Todt spoke of the importance of this initiative and of the way the new space will be run: “The partnership between the Nova Acropolis School of Sport with Heart and the Brazilian Pierre de Coubertin Committee has developed over time through the Acropolitan Olympics and the Pierre de Coubertin lecture series, reaching thousands of people worldwide. In this new room, we will find works by Pierre de Coubertin, materials produced about him, many materials for reading, enjoying, debating and thinking about Olympism, about the true meaning of this philosophy, which is mainly practised in sport”.

In the same vein, Iglesias added that this new space is an important step for the future: “This beautiful place will become a small spot where seeds can germinate in people, men and women of the present and the future. In this way, we will all be able to live the dream of Pierre de Coubertin and so many other idealists who wanted to use sport as a means of improving the human being and, consequently, society and the world”.

New Acropolis is an international organisation, present in over 50 countries, dedicated to philosophy, culture and volunteering. Founded in 1957, New Acropolis promotes the study and practice of classical philosophy in an integrated way, covering theoretical, practical and humanist aspects.

The activity of the School of Sport with Heart is based on three principles that it shares with the CBPC: 1) to channel vocations with a philosophical spirit; 2) to use sport as a means of transmitting and developing values in people; 3) to use sport as a means of generating health.

It is in this perspective that the partnership between the CBPC and the School of Sport with the Heart of the New Acropolis has been established. Philosophy and sport walk together in the same direction, seeking to build solid human values that give dignity to the human condition. The same principles, different manifestations. They are universal symbols, different cultural and geographical expressions in which the Olympic flame takes on its shape.
