In his function as President of the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee and as a member of the Olympic Education Commission of the IOC, Stephan Wassong was invited to give an interview to a well-known German radio station (Südwestrundfunk). Stephan Wassong was asked to talk about the origins of the Olympic rings, Pierre de Coubertin’s ideas behind the symbol and its meaning. It was also an opportunity to explain that the rings themselves represent the five continents that were represented in the Olympic movement when the Olympic flag was officially adopted by the IOC in 1914. The colours of the rings do not represent the continents. The high visibility of the Olympic rings as a global symbol was also explained. In addition, Stephan Wassong points out that the Olympic Rings have a level of recognition of more than 90% throughout the world, which is comparable to that of the Red Cross and the Coca-Cola logo.
